Deadwyler will welcome The Knight of Glin and James Peill on October 21, 2008 for a Gallery Talk and slideshow based on their recent book Irish Furniture. The Gallery Talk is presented in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Irish Georgian Society, which will launch an Atlanta chapter that evening to commemorate the occasion. The Knight is the president of the Society, whose website is at www.igs.ie.
"Gutsy" and "exuberant" are two of the adjectives frequently used to describe Irish furniture, referring to its imaginative use of bold carving and fanciful decorative motifs. Co-authored by the Knight and Mr. Peill, Irish Furniture is a beautiful volume enjoyed by novices and scholars alike. It is the first and only comprehensive look at Irish furniture, and has quickly become the seminal work on the subject.
The Gallery Talk will introduce us to some of the colorful aristocrats and landed gentry who commissioned important pieces and collections, and give us a glimpse of what it was like to live in their houses and on their estates. The speakers will also share images with us of some of the most striking examples of their legacy of Irish furniture, many of them still in private hands and not accessible to the public.
At the conclusion of the presentation, the Knight of Glin will the launch the Atlanta chapter of the Irish Georgian Society. The Society's mission is to encourage an interest in and to promote the conservation of distinguished examples of architecture and the allied arts of all periods in Ireland.
Copies of Irish Furniture will be on hand for purchase, and the Knight and Mr. Peill will be available after the lecture for signing. Individuals who join the Irish Georgian Society that evening will be offered signed copies of Irish Furniture, courtesy of Deadwyler.
In addition to serving as president of the Society, Desmond FitzGerald, the 29th Knight of Glin, is a governor of the National Gallery of Ireland and Doctor in Letters Honoria Causa of Trinity College Dublin. He lives in Glin Castle, County Limerick. James Peill is a Vice-President in the European Furniture Department at Christie's. He grew up in the Welsh Marches, graduated from Edinburgh University and joined Christie's in 1994.
